Hurricanes do occur south of the equator but observations show that they do not form within 5 degrees latitude of the equator. Tropical cyclones' winds rotate counter-clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. NOAA's Hurricane FAQ is online at
